The first images are of dresses made of sailcloth – yes, that is sailcloth as in sails on sail boats. The dresses underwent several design drafts as this was a collaborative effort that shifted as the piece evolved…will they be worn on land, in water, or both?

It was a challenge working with sailcloth. The material is super stiff and difficult to penetrate with a domestic sewing machine. As a result, the construction involved a great deal of hand sewing with pliers. Things were sometimes fraught, turbulent. And below, the results.

The final three images depict sourced, rather than constructed, costumes. Two variations on the sailor motif.
